Research Lab Operations Manager

Perform various complex technical and scientific duties supporting and furthering Albany Medical College research operations for individual labs. Independently manage research laboratory operations while frequently consulting with Principal Investigators on the overall direction of laboratory operation and research.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities include:

  • Design experiments and perform various complex technical duties in conducting biochemical, molecular biological, and immunological laboratory research to obtain data for publication and grant submissions; compile, analyze, document, and draw conclusions from experimental results.

  • Compile and document experimental results. Prepare drafts of methods and figures of results for inclusion in manuscripts and grants.

  • Review laboratory methods manuals and scientific literature for information on developing, performing, and troubleshooting a research technique or experiment.

  • Confer regularly with the principal investigator to review experimental objectives and direction; assist in developing research directions; design protocols and modify existing laboratory procedures and techniques to meet the experiment's needs as required. At the direction of the principal investigator, oversee research technician staff.

  • Design and troubleshoot routine and complex experiments to address key research questions alone and with the principal investigator. Develop and maintain current skill level and expertise in research.

  • Supervise the work of lower-level laboratory personnel within designated areas. Participate in directing research training and lead in training new personnel. Provide input and recommendations regarding lower-level laboratory personnel performance to the principal investigator as needed.

  • Monitor the satisfactory operation of shared department equipment, troubleshoot instrument problems, and perform basic repairs.

  • Schedule preventative maintenance and service visits with vendor technical staff. Coordinate shared equipment usage with other labs and departments.

  • Be familiar with regulatory requirements for the lab and ensure users comply with those standards.

  • Oversee laboratory safety and ensure that the laboratory complies with all local, state, and federal regulations.

  • Coordinate with AMC Environmental Health & Safety, Facilities, and Environmental Services to resolve any department-wide concerns or incidents and assist in setting up or cleaning out labs.

  • Maintain chemical inventories and prepare annual reports for EHS for the assigned lab.

  • Serve as a liaison between the AMC Purchasing Department and department administration to troubleshoot interruptions and errors in the supply chain.

  • Perform other duties related to the work described herein.

Qualifications Requirements:

Qualifications/ Educations/ Experience:

  • Bachelor’s degree in biology, biochemistry, molecular biology, or a related scientific field is required.

  • Master’s degree in biology, biochemistry, molecular biology, or a related scientific field is preferred.

  • A bachelor’s degree in biology, biochemistry, molecular biology, or a related scientific field is required.

  • Five (5) or more years of increasingly responsible experience conducting laboratory research with managerial experience is also preferred.

  • Requires at least three (3) or more years of increasingly responsible experience conducting laboratory research. Other academic achievements may also be considered.
