Job Summary

The University of Michigan-Flint is looking for a Communications Specialist within the Division of Student Affairs (DSA). Reporting to the Vice Chancellor for Student Affairs, the Communications Specialist meaningfully contributes in engaging the community through communications, telling the story of the Division of Student Affairs and raise visibility of its role in shaping and supporting the student experience. The Communications Specialist will plan, develop, and manage content for websites, publications, and social media outlets, and design and implement a strategic communications plan for the division. Through a collaborative approach, the position will coordinate marketing and communication strategies for programs and initiatives across the division to include creating social, visual, and news content for DSA and UM-Flint use. This position serves as a liaison between all units within DSA and Marketing and Communications (MAC).

Responsibilities*

  • Design and implement a comprehensive strategic communications plan for the Division of Student Affairs.

  • Coordinate marketing and communication efforts across units within DSA to include identifying target audiences, setting communication goals, developing important messages and measuring impact.

  • Plan, develop, and manage content for websites, publications, digital signs, social media outlets and other forms of communications within the Division of Student Affairs.

  • Monitor, guide, and maximize community and public awareness about the Division of Student Affairs and its many activities, programs, services, resources and initiatives.

  • Develop content marketing strategies for DSA in alignment with university and broader priorities.

  • Ensure that digital and design content meets with MAC's style, tone and brand standards, as well as accessibility compliance and related standards. Ensure content is current, accurate and error-free.

  • Maintain a consistent look and feel throughout all web properties and publications.

  • Communicate with staff to gather information about events, meetings, news and promotions; attend and take photographs at certain events.

  • Serve as the primary point of contact for managing the UM-Flint web bot (Maizey) and the SMS text messaging calendar.

  • In consultation with library staff and ITS, coordinate DSA's role in the Emergency Laptop Loan Program.

  • In consultation with the VCSA, compile data and generate DSA Annual Report.

  • Troubleshoot problems and work with the content management system/ITS/MAC and others as needed.

Required Qualifications*

  • Bachelor's degree in communications, marketing, journalism or relevant field.

  • Three (3) or more years of relevant experience in marketing and/or communications, or related field for this level of position.

  • Must possess copywriting, editing and proofreading skills

Work Schedule

A consistent hybrid work schedule (some days on campus and some days working remotely) is available for this position at this time. However, this is subject to change based upon the duties of the position and the needs of the department.

Background Screening
