Research Development Project Manager - CVM

The Cornell University College of Veterinary Medicine seeks a Research Development Project Manager to work directly with the Associate Dean for Research and Graduate Education and with members of the College Research Office. As the lead Research Development Project Manager within CVM, you will utilize project management concepts to perform job duties in accordance with Cornell University's vision, mission, and values. Specifically, you will help to develop and implement a suite of proposal development tools and capabilities within CVM to increase the success of principal investigators (PIs) in obtaining external funding in areas of strategic importance to the College. A major goal for this position will be to extend the College's external funding portfolio by facilitating new interdisciplinary activities led by our faculty, and by keeping up to date with emerging funding opportunities across the landscape of new and existing external sponsors. A second goal is to provide critical networking and connectivity with other affiliated colleges/campuses of Cornell, as well as with external partners in order to position CVM faculty for success in diversifying our externally sponsored awards portfolio.


In this position, you will:

  • Establish a college wide framework of communication protocols, collaboration tools, guidelines and processes that will simplify and encourage/incentivize faculty to seek and apply for mega proposals and training grant opportunities.
  • Meet regularly with College chairs and Center directors to learn from and advise on new opportunities for large, extramural, multi-investigator grants and contracts approaches and methods.
  • Establish a working group consisting of the Associate Dean for Research, CVM College Research Office, Cornell Office of Sponsored Programs, external consultants, and collaborators, etc. with a focus on creating a strong network of PI support, and a database of knowledge that CVM faculty can use to expand their funding portfolios
  • Assist CVM PIs with identifying CVM-relevant funding opportunities and partnerships throughout all campuses of Cornell University

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree with a minimum of 5 years of relevant experience or equivalent combination of education and experience
  • Strong understanding of the research areas of strength throughout the college with proven experience bringing interdisciplinary groups together from across multiple colleges and/or institutions
  • Possess a working understanding of the proposal preparation and submission process and proven successful experience working with researchers to develop successful multi-investigator proposals
  • Demonstrated experience in managing the development of successful grants either from the grantmaking or grant application side; familiarity with various sponsoring agencies and electronic research administration systems
  • Ability to interpret and understand funding agency and program priorities, policies, politics, and deadlines
  • Ability to identify and act on new funding opportunities as they arise by assembling the appropriate teams of investigators from across CVM and Cornell.
  • Ability to analyze program announcements and work with CVM leadership and PIs to develop proposal timelines and strategies.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Master's degree in agriculture or life sciences.
  • Research experience and/or managing a research operation in a large decentralized organization, preferably in academia.

  • This position offers a hybrid work schedule with the expectation of 3 days onsite in Ithaca, NY and 2 days remote per week
