Position Summary

Plays a critical role within the Englander Institute of Precision Medicine (EIPM) Laboratory. Responsible for carrying out laboratory activities associated with specimen processing and novel EIPM research assays and processes. Under direction of platform managers, assists in centralizing key workflows, and both independently and collaboratively perform selected procedures in the wet lab associated with molecular, genomic, histology, organoid, and/or biobanking methods, including but not limited to sample preparation, tissue culturing and processing, quality control, and biospecimen storage and tracking.

Job Responsibilities

  • Assists with experimental design and carries out experiments related to precision medicine projects.

  • Analyzes and interprets experimental results and provides input related to subsequent experimental designs.

  • Prepares and maintains detailed QC documentation, logs, and laboratory notebooks for progress reporting and experimental tracking for the platform.

  • May perform various molecular biology procedures, such as PCR, DNA/RNA extractions, protein and DNA electrophoresis, blood processing, cloning, tissue culture, and drug experiments.

  • May prepare tissue specimens according to specific research protocols, perform histologic staining and tissue sectioning, and prepares slides from tissue sections for microscopic examination and diagnosis.

  • Enters experimental, technical, and QC data for translational research biospecimens into the Laboratory Information Management System (LIMS).

  • Under supervision, maintains inventory of research specimens in laboratory databases and availability of space in storage units.

  • Receives and verifies translational research samples for downstream processing and accessioning from WCM/NYP clinics and external institutions.

  • May be responsible for overseeing next-generation biobanking workflows and facilitate the receipt, storage, cataloguing and shipment of samples within and between institutions.

  • Supports protocol design of new techniques to assist in overall laboratory efficiency.

  • Conducts library research and literature searches using various computer systems. Assists in editing scientific publications, abstracts and posters.

  • May assist in the orientation and training of new investigators, fellows, residents, and technical staff in the use of equipment, products and experimental techniques.

  • Ensures a clean working area and is responsible for washing and storing glassware.

  • Ensures that safe laboratory practices are followed, including the use and disposal of chemicals and hazardous materials.

  • Ensures that facilities and equipment are in optimal and proper working condition. Coordinates preventative maintenance and repairs as needed. May monitor storage units such as -80 freezers to ensure they are operating at appropriate temperature.

Education

  • Bachelor's Degree

Experience

Approximately 2 years of related work experience within a laboratory.

Prior experience handling biological specimens is strongly preferred.

Prior experience in molecular biology techniques such as sample extraction and tissue culture is desired.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

  • Demonstrated organizational skills and ability to pay close attention to detail.

  • Ability to multi-task and handle multiple competing priorities.

This position may require standing or sitting for long periods of time.

This role may require working within Biologic Safety Level 1 and 2.
