Responsibilities

  • Understands how their specific area of research will influence the evolving state-of-the-art developments of the broader research area outside of own specialty. Applies expertise to impact direction of field and/or of company with respect to the field; and recognizes the relevant people, organizations, and institutions that will influence the research agenda and competitive landscape within their research area.

  • Defines a clear long-term research agenda and vision that influences the direction of their research area, the company, and the related research community.

  • Provides vision to advise teams on how to identify which insights, tools, technologies, and methods to incorporate into research pipelines to ensure quality, scientific rigor, and ethical best practices. Leads the development of new or modified tools, technologies, and methods within and across research pipelines; and applies deep subject matter expert knowledge around a broad array of specialized tools/methods to drive cohesive planning for research projects of significant scope and impact.        

  • Leads a collaborative research effort (possibly spanning multiple teams/Universities inside and outside of Microsoft) to advance a long-term research agenda through multiple projects, yielding new algorithms, prototypes, theories, tools, methods, analyses, insights, or collections of data of significant scope and impact to Microsoft, the industry, the research community, and/or the broader society as a whole.

  • Is sought out by product or business group leaders, inside or outside Microsoft for research expertise and input on technical or business decisions at a strategic level. Drives a measurable impact on the business and changes the direction of the field as a world expert (e.g., invents something that no one else in the world could, advises on strategic business decisions such as acquisitions, strategic partnerships, product categories, company policy, tools, methodologies).

  • Enables effective collaboration among multiple research and business teams in other organizations, and provides clear, energetic leadership to the external research community in one or more research areas. Serves as the general or program chair of a top conference, authors influential publications, and delivers keynote addresses at influential conferences, with an impact similar to that of a (United States) full-tenured professor.

  • Represents Microsoft externally and leverages network to build recruitment pipeline and people capability from an end-to-end point of view of the business by understanding academic insights, stakeholders, and research alignment across business areas. Contributes to the development of a capability strategy that serves long-term research objectives and attracts/cultivates talent and desired capabilities.

  • As a Research Manager, deliver success through empowerment and accountability by modeling, coaching, and caring.

Qualifications

Required Qualifications

  • Doctorate in relevant field AND 5+ years related research experience

  • OR equivalent experience.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Doctorate in relevant field AND 8+ years related research experience

  • OR equivalent experience.

  • 5+ years leadership experience (e.g., leading research projects, leading program committees, mentoring interns/post-docs or managing researchers).

  • Experience publishing academic papers as a lead author or essential contributor.

  • Experience participating in a top conference in relevant research domain.

Research Sciences M6 - The typical base pay range for this role across the U.S. is USD $158,500 - $276,600 per year. There is a different range applicable to specific work locations, within the San Francisco Bay area and New York City metropolitan area, and the base pay range for this role in those locations is USD $202,800 - $304,200 per year.
