The Senior Tax Counsel will be an integral member of the tax team working in coordination with the greater Coinbase financial, legal, operations and Product teams to support Coinbase’s growth. The candidate will be a trusted advisor, hands on and collaborative team member with his/her/their colleagues. Tax policy also is an important component of this role to ensure that Coinbase and crypto are subject to efficient and effective tax rules globally. What you’ll be doing (ie. job duties):

  • Work with Tax, Finance, Legal and Product teams on tax planning initiatives

  • Work with Tax, Finance, Legal and Product teams on transfer pricing and intercompany arrangements

  • Work on the tax aspects related to crypto assets

  • Work with legal on tax aspects related to crypto assets

  • Work with Corp Dev on M&A and investments in new ventures

  • Work on representation of Coinbase in tax audits, exams and controversy

  • Assess potential risk related to tax aspects of Coinbase’s business

  • Drafting guidance and protocols on tax for internal use

  • Working on customer communications related to tax

  • Execution, maintenance and constant improvement of tax processes and controls

  • Partnering with the greater Coinbase tax and finance teams to ensure full compliance with all laws and regulations

  • Model the federal tax impact of new legislation and/or planning projects and help implement new tax planning initiatives

  • Manage various calculations of E&P, BEAT, CAMT, GILTI, FDII utilized for compliance and the financial statement

  • Provide support relating to US tax examinations and respond to inquiries by the IRS

  • Identify and oversee improvements to federal income tax processes

  • Prepare internal tax technical memoranda to support tax positions

  • Drive improvements to all aspects of Coinbase’s tax position

What we look for in you (ie. job requirements):

  • 7+ years of relevant tax experience, ideally with a global law firm, a Big 4 accounting firm or at major company

  • In depth technical knowledge of U.S. tax provisions affecting international operations including Sub F, GILTI, FDII, FTCs

  • Excellent speaking and communication skills while working with business teams and explaining tax concepts to both tax and non-tax audiences

  • Outstanding detail-orientation and process-orientation skills

  • Collaborative and positive orientation

  • Willingness to pivot and learn

Nice to haves:

  • LLM in Tax

  • Audit and exam experience

  • Government (IRS, Treasury, OECD) experience

  • Broad based technical tax experience, ideally with a focus on financial services

  • Exposure to US international tax concepts of Subpart F, foreign tax credits, GILTI, FDII and BEAT

  • Experience working in teams and collaborating across different business and professional disciplines

  • Crypto industry knowledge or experience

Pay Transparency Notice: Depending on your work location, the target annual salary for this position can range as detailed below. Full time offers from Coinbase also includetarget bonus + target equity + benefits (including medical, dental, vision and 401(k)).

Pay Range:

$259,250—$305,000 USD
