University of Rochester Equipment Tech III, ED in Rochester, New York

Responsibilities

JOB SUMMARY :

The Equipment Tech II in the ED provides technical knowledge in preparing instruments, equipment and supplies for use by clinical staff in trauma rooms, adult acute, adult non-acute, peds ED and observation areas of the Emergency Department. Insure equipment is in operating order. Also responsible for proper care and handling of instruments and equipment and facilitating cleaning and maintenance of equipment. Responsible for maintaining sterile technique when indicated, safe handling of sharps and performance of all duties as per hospital policy. Must demonstrate proper handling of solutions. Additional responsibilities include committee work, special projects, and precepting. Assumes technical and maintenance responsibilities for unit medical equipment and assists ED operations supervisor with the coordination of all assigned administrative duties. Participates in quality improvement activities. Reports to the ED operations supervisor. Is instrumental in training staff in decontamination procedures and information dissemination on decontamination policy / protocol. Assumes leadership role for ED stocking techs to monitor, and offer guidance in performance of their duties.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Consistently utilizes ED operations department check lists insure ED equipment is in working order.

  • Assembles required instruments/equipment for ED use.

  • Maintain equipment in a timely and efficient manner.

  • Anticipates instrument and/or equipment requirements for the ED.

  • Demonstrates knowledge and skill of: ED procedures, instruments, routines, and equipment.

  • Surveys the patient care area to insure a safe work environment; identifies potential hazards to supervisory personnel if unable to correct.

  • Prepares instruments for decontamination and sterilization.

  • Performs first call maintenance of all assigned equipment including readiness, cleaning, routine disinfecting, and identifying needed technical repairs. Follows established protocols for reprocessing and for storing of the equipment.

  • Monitors and documents potency testing and expiration date of disinfecting solution as required by institutional policy; stores and disposes of disinfecting solution according to institutional policy.

  • Coordinates equipment repairs, schedules routine maintenance and safety checks, arranges for loaner equipment when appropriate, as well as researching costs related to repairs, making appropriate recommendations regarding repairing/replacing equipment, and maintaining documentation of equipment repair expenditures, and safety checks.

  • Evaluates, troubleshoots, and performs on site adjustments/repairs, in conjunction with Medical Engineering Lab, for technical equipment and accessories.

  • Familiar with theory and practice of decontamination disaster preparedness. Able to train hospital staff in the use of decontamination equipment, supplies, and donning and doffing protective decontamination suits and PAPRs.

  • Member of Decontamination committee.

  • Makes recommendations for reimbursement to patients for lost belongings.

  • Maintains visibility and accessibility to providers and assigned groups and staff for areas of responsibility.

  • Practices universal precautions and adheres to requested health and safety standards.

  • Recognizes emergency situations and initiates appropriate response.

  • Follows directions of authorized personnel during emergencies.

  • Identifies potential hazards to supervisory personnel if unable to correct.

  • Applies cost effective measures to unit operation.

  • Listens attentively for, anticipates and responds to requests from members of the ED team.

  • Demonstrates proper care of instruments and equipment.

  • Safely operates unit-based equipment including checking equipment and conducting quality controls.

  • Initiates/participates in quality assurance studies and continuous quality monitoring, inclusive of equipment, equipment purchases, and high-level disinfecting of equipment, and utilizes results of quality activities to initiate changes in practices as indicated.

PERSONAL ROLE DEVELOPMENT:

  • Maintains updated knowledge of policies and procedures applicable to work environment and incorporates change into practice.

  • Accepts responsibility to learn about new equipment and procedures.

  • Assists in orientation and training of ED operations and patient care staff.

  • Assists the operations supervisor in the ongoing supervision and regular performance evaluation of ED stocking techs.

  • Initiates/participates in quality assurance studies and continuous quality monitoring, inclusive of equipment, equipment purchase, and high level disinfecting of equipment, and utilizes results of quality activities to initiate changes in practices as indicated.

  • Assists in the maintenance and use of the patient data base system; provides orientation to staff and troubleshooting skills, and assists in daily back up of the system.

Other duties as assigned

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

  • High school graduate required.

  • Graduate of a two-year college program or combination of equivalent education and experience preferred.

  • Experience in the health care field required.

  • Operating room or similar experience preferred.

  • Able to work with others and model key behaviors that support staff in the delivery of quality and efficient services required.

  • Able to work with medical equipment repair and be able to manage data on a computer system required.

Pay Range

Pay Range: $17.00 - $22.95 Hourly

The referenced pay range represents the minimum and maximum compensation for this job. Individual annual salaries/hourly rates will be set within the job’s compensation range, and will be determined by considering factors including, but not limited to, market data, education, experience, qualifications, expertise of the individual, and internal equity considerations.
