Corewell Health Technical Director Microbiology in Royal Oak, Michigan

Job Summary

Provide microbiological expertise to the Chief of Clinical Pathology and other clinical faculty in matters associated with testing for infectious agents including acquisition, operation, institution and quality control of instruments and methods used in the performance of routine and specialty testing in microbiology, including detection of infectious agents by serologic methods as well as molecular assays for infectious agents.

Essential Functions

  • Works closely with Infectious Disease specialists and scientists at the Michigan Department of Health and Human Services to provide appropriate tests of the highest quality for detection of infectious agents.

  • Selects, evaluates and institutes the use of new methods and equipment under the supervision of the Chief of Clinical Pathology. Includes participation with appropriate Diagnostic Management Teams to determine test alternatives, review data, cost analysis, establishment reference ranges.

  • Investigates and resolves problems with equipment, test procedures, systems of operation, or hazards within the laboratory, and provides expertise on chemical safety to the hospital.

  • Provides support for interpreting test results and information on testing available in the section.

  • Establishes and monitors quality control procedures and quality assurance practice and participates in training and competence assessment.

  • Participates in the development of long-range plans, performance objectives and standards for the section, including policies and protocols for complying with regulatory and certification requirements of CLIA, CAP and Joint Commission.

  • Participates in training programs for Clinical Pathology residents, fellows, medical technologists and medical laboratory technicians and in continuing education programs for departmental personnel and medical staff.

Qualifications

Required

  • Doctorate in microbiology with a specialty in clinical microbiology, bacteriology, virology or molecular biology, or related discipline.

  • ABMM certification (Diplomate, American Board of Medical Microbiology) or certification eligible. If not already board certified, must complete certification within 1 year of hire.

Preferred

  • Completed fellowship in clinical microbiology.

  • 3+ years of relevant leadership experience in a high-volume clinical microbiology lab.
