Chevron is accepting online applications for the position of Environmental & Safety Counsel/Senior Counsel located in San Ramon, CA or Houston, TX through May 28th, 2024 at 11:59pm.

The Environmental & Safety Law Group (E&S Law) provides comprehensive, high quality legal advice and advocacy to Chevron Corporation and its subsidiaries, operating units and supporting departments on a global basis. The successful candidate for this position will be based in Houston, Texas or San Ramon, California and will manage a docket of work with a broad-based environmental and safety law emphasis.The attorney will be expected to be a subject-matter expert in one or more environmental area(s) (air, water, waste, remediation, and/or safety). The work will include supporting the entire enterprise in areas of environmental and safety law.

The attorney is expected to handle regulatory, permitting, enforcement, remediation, compliance management, transactional, and environmental liability issues. Strong analytical, problem solving, negotiating, and communication skills are essential. The ability to work closely with business clients, HSE specialists, technical subject matter experts, other in-house counsel, and outside law firms to facilitate effective regulatory compliance and the early and efficient resolution of HSE legal issues is essential.

Responsibilities for this position may include but are not limited to:

  • Delivering superior performance and results consistent with the Chevron Way, and Chevron’s tenets of Operational Excellence and Capital Stewardship.

  • Respecting diversity and inclusion and adhering to principles of professionalism and the canons of legal ethics.

  • Extensive client counseling in HSE laws, rules, regulations, policies, and guidelines; interpretation of HSE rules and regulations; and participation in the selection and oversight of outside counsel for advice and litigation.

  • Managing a docket of Chevron regulatory, administrative, policy, and enforcement matters related to environmental and/or safety issues.

  • Achieving excellent, cost-effective results through early hazard recognition and strategic case and matter management.

  • Creating and maintaining the highest level of client confidence and satisfaction through excellent communication and professionalism.

  • Coordinating and ensuring maximum effective use of in-house and outside legal resources.

  • Maintaining expertise in the attorney's legal fields of responsibility, keeping abreast of policy and regulatory developments.

  • Participating with other in-house personnel and with industry associations in providing constructive input to governmental bodies on legislative and regulatory issues.

  • Cooperating with and assisting the other members of the group on day-to-day matters as well as increasing the professional reputation of the group as a whole.

    Required Qualifications:

  • Juris Doctorate required and admission to practice law in at least one state.

  • This position may involve moderate travel.

  • Candidate must have at least seven (7) years of environmental and/or safety law experience with broad-based responsibility for a portfolio of legal matters including compliance counseling, investigations, interpreting and negotiating agency orders and agreements, advising on the environmental aspects of commercial transactions, and providing support on environmental and/or safety issues with a demonstrated high level of expertise in at least one environmental media.

  • Experience as an advocate in administrative proceedings or litigation involving such issues, demonstrated ability to analyze and evaluate legal questions and client needs, strong writing and oral communication skills, and strong client relationship skills.

  • An attorney in this position must be a self-starter who is adept at working in a true team environment and partnering with management, clients, other in-house counsel, outside counsel and staff.

    Relocation Option:

    Relocation may be considered within Chevron parameters.

    International Considerations:

    Expatriate assignments will not be considered.

  • The compensation and reference to benefits for this role is listed on this posting in compliance with applicable law. The selected candidate’s compensation will be determined based on his or her skills, experience, and qualifications. Please note that the compensation and benefits listed below are only applicable to successful candidates who are hired onto local United States payroll.

  • A possible range is: $166,500 to $270,700, which could be higher or lower depending on candidate years of experience.
