Amazon Energy Strategy and Delivery Manager, AWS Infrastructure Energy Team in Tokyo, Japan

Description

In this role, you will be responsible for region strategy; business development & cost reduction opportunities with utilities and other power vendors; as well as program management & delivery of large scale critical high voltage power infrastructure projects for AWS data-centers. The ideal candidate for this role will have a high-level technical understanding of high voltage substation and transmission line projects and experience in delivering substation programs, on time, from design to energization phase inclusive of contract negotiations.

The candidate must be able to manage multiple large-scale power infrastructure projects across different regions. The candidate will also be required to evaluate data center sites and develop power infrastructure strategies to serve those sites. The candidate will require strong communications skills to work with internal and external stakeholders including engineering, real estate & planning teams, as well as government utilities and agencies, EPC contractors, and design consultants. The candidate will work as part of an integrated Energy team across the APAC region to implement energy program requirements and deliver tangible reliability and cost saving results.

This is an individual contributor role based out of Tokyo, Japan. 20% travel may be required

Key job responsibilities

• Study, understand and have view on regional power infrastructure network and utility planning and changes to the broader power infrastructure.

• Managing utility contracts/retail agreements – entering into connection agreement; contracting the right capacity to optimize on power purchase costs.

• Undertake power due diligence for new or proposed data center sites to check power availability and feasibility.

• Manage and co-ordinate with internal stakeholders including Planning, Real estate, Design, Procurement, Construction, Operations, Finance & Commissioning teams.

• Develop and execute energy strategies that leverage capital projects (utility grid connections, high voltage substations, energy storage, etc) to reduce long term energy costs.

• Identify and develop innovative cost savings projects and initiatives related to power infrastructure and supply.

• Participate in quarterly budgeting exercise with Finance team.

• Work with utility regulators to develop policies and guidelines that enable broader AWS strategies and objective.

• Report on key project risks & issues at senior management level.

• Manage electrical utility, project management consultants, right of way (easements), substation contractors and owner's engineers for transmission works & substations to deliver end to end HV power infrastructure on time, on budget and to specifications.

• Monitoring of power infrastructure reliability indices SAIFI/SAIDI and take corrective action by working with Operations, Power Utilities to improve the same.

Basic Qualifications

• 5+ years of experience working in Japan in utility/renewables/energy industry in a commercial/business development or technical role.

• Bachelor's Degree (BA/BS) required in Engineering/Business or other technical field.

• Experience in contract negotiations.

• Fluent/Business level Japanese.

• Demonstrated ability to operate and thrive with partial information and high levels of ambiguity.

• Possess strong organizational, communication and team building skills. Must build strong working relationships, both internally and externally stakeholders.

• Ability to self-start and self-motivate in a dynamic environment.

• Experience in budgeting and analysing cost/benefit trade-offs across a strategic portfolio.

• Experience reviewing energy projects and contracts with utilities, contractors and internal stakeholders including Engineering, Construction, Finance, Legal, Security, Operations, Commissioning etc.

• Sound understanding of different Electrical Bus bar schemes and Substation layouts.

• Experience developing and delivering Medium Voltage and High Voltage electric infrastructure projects in a planning or project management role.

Preferred Qualifications

• Experience working directly with public utility commissions and other energy regulators.

• Work with utility regulators to develop policies and guidelines that enable broader AWS strategies and objectives.

• 8+ years of experience working in different APAC regions preferably in Japan & Korea and in utility/renewables/energy industry in a commercial/business development or technical role.

• The ability to manage multiple simultaneous projects requiring frequent communication, organization, time management, and problem-solving skills.

• Experience planning, engineering, developing or constructing substations or other 66kV or greater (154500kV) energy infrastructure.

• Experience permitting, planning, engineering, developing or constructing transmission lines.

• Experience evaluating and implementing innovative infrastructure and operational strategies within the energy sector, such as energy storage, demand response, fuel cells, etc.

• Experience with IT infrastructure, data centres and cloud services.

• Experience successfully negotiating new tariff rates, power purchase agreements and/or energy infrastructure contracts in regulatory regimes.

• Project Management Professional (PMP) or equivalent.
