JOB DESCRIPTION AND POSITION REQUIREMENTS:

We are searching for Senior Systems Engineer to join our Autonomy and Emerging Technologies Department at the Applied Research Laboratory (ARL) at Penn State University. ARL’s purpose is to research and develop innovative solutions to challenging scientific, engineering, and technology problems in support of the Navy, the Department of Defense (DoD), and the Intel Community (IC).

The Department’s focus is on applying emergent technologies in the area of autonomous system development, evaluation, and testing of unmanned vehicles. This position will apply modern software practices to support the creation of autonomy software systems for direct customer programs to advance technologies in the undersea systems domain.

ARL is an authorized DoD SkillBridge partner and welcomes all transitioning military members to apply.

You will:

  • Develop/contribute to system and sub-system software design, implementation, test/evaluation, and deployment

  • Lead/contribute to a small team of software engineers to develop and test prototype architecture solutions on autonomous unmanned systems

  • Interact/ regularly collaborate with the software team, program management, program sponsors, and stakeholders

  • Keep current with relevant emerging technologies and trends by presenting at conferences and workshops relevant to department and project goals

Additional responsibilities for higher level position include:

  • Plan and direct research projects that have a substantial impact, that extends knowledge and understanding; plan, organize, and supervise the work of staff scientists, engineers, and technicians

  • Participate in the strategic planning process and provide input into strategic decisions for organization, unit, and strategic partners

  • Propose and lead new initiatives; guide programs of national or international significance; identify future problems, and research trends/opportunities

    This position can be filled at multiple levels, depending upon your education and experience. Typically requires a Bachelor’s Degree or higher in an Engineering or Science discipline plus fourteen years of related work experience. Additional experience and/or education and competencies are required for higher level jobs.

Required skills/experience areas include:

  • Practical understanding of Agile software methodologies

  • Familiarity with DevSecOps - specifically with GitLab and/or Atlassian tools (JIRA, Bitbucket, Confluence)

  • Proficiency in one or more higher-level languages - C/C++, Python, R, Java, or similar

  • Application of traditional systems engineering techniques, as applied to complex systems development

  • DoD (Department of Defense) or Intel environment

Preferred skills/experience areas include:

  • Software using containerization technologies (Open Container Initiative, Docker, K8s/K3s) and micro-service architectures

  • Vehicle autonomy, machine learning, autonomous systems simulation/evaluation, undersea sensors, and vehicle systems

  • Digital engineering methodologies to include Model-Based Systems Engineering

  • Application of Modeling and Simulation for test and evaluation

  • Navy systems development

  • Development of software for autonomous or unmanned systems is highly desired

  • DoD acquisition and/or sustainment programs

  • Active Secret/Top Secret clearance

Your working location will be flexible. It may operate hybrid (remote/in-person) model or fully in-person at University Park Campus or Reston, VA office. Standard working hours are in the Eastern Time zone.

The pay range for this position, including all possible grades is:

$123,200.00 - $219,600.00
