The Opportunity

Abt Associates seeks a research assistant to support the implementation of the APS gender analysis operations research activity. This operations research is implemented as part of the Community Health Workers (CHW) Activity under the USAID-funded Local Health System Sustainability Project (LHSS). The Project aims to help low- and middle-income countries transition to sustainable, self-financed health systems as a means to support access to universal health coverage. We work with partner countries and local stakeholders to reduce financial barriers to care and treatment, ensure equitable access to essential health services for all people, and improve the quality of health services. Led by Abt Associates, the five-year project will build local capacity to sustain strong health system performance, supporting countries on their journey to self-reliance and prosperity.

As the research assistant, you will be responsible for data collection, transcription, and cleaning under the guidance of the principal investigators.

This is a two-month, full-time position anticipated to begin on July 1, 2024, and end on August 30, 2024. The research is being implemented in Maputo, Inhambane, and Sofala provinces. Local residents from these provinces are highly encouraged to apply.

Core Responsibilities

Participate in data collection training

Read and understand the study protocol, data collection tools, and standard operating procedures

Verify the eligibility of all study participants

Complete the registration form for all eligible study participants

Obtain informed consent from study participants following ethical procedures and standards

Conduct surveys and in-depth interviews with CHWs, supervisors, community leaders, and key informants at district, provincial, and national levels.

Record in-depth interviews using a digital audio recorder

Listen and transcribe the audio of the interviews using interviews

Review, verify, and make necessary corrections to the transcriptions

Provide daily updates on data collection progress to the principal investigators using standard reporting forms

Maintain the confidentiality of the information collected

Communicate as needed and regularly with the principal investigators to address challenges that may arise and inform the need for additional equipment and/or supplies.

Carry out study activities in accordance with study procedures.

Take ethical aspects into account when performing your duties, maintaining professional secrecy, and guaranteeing the confidentiality and privacy of the information to which you have access

Perform other job-related duties as required

What We Value

A degree in a social or biomedical field (anthropology, sociology, biology, medicine, psychology, among other related areas)

A minimum of 2 years of experience in quantitative, qualitative, or mixed methods research

Fluency in Portuguese and local languages in Inhambane, Maputo, and Sofala required

Experience with data collection with a focus on conducting in-depth interviews and surveys

Previous experience working in public health or policy research is preferred

Previous experience in community health preferred

Ability to work well in a collaborative team environment

Solid knowledge of Microsoft Office programs

Previous experience using Open Data Kit (ODK) software for data collection is highly desired
