The Work You Will Do:

This posting is for a Distributed Computer System Consultant position located at the Department of Environmental Protection’s Southeast District Office located in West Palm Beach Florida. This position will assist in the daily functions of the Business Planning Program.

This position is located in West Palm Beach Florida. West Palm Beach is Palm Beach County's capital city and its cultural center. Its active downtown stretches from a scenic pier on the Lake Worth Lagoon to a waterfront Great Lawn, which hosts a weekly green market, outdoor concerts and this season a 35-foot-tall holiday sandcastle. Dozens of local beaches provide easy access to both the Atlantic Ocean and the Intracoastal Waterway. Several State Parks as well as National Parks are in the immediate area as well.

    Your Specific Responsibilities:

    This is a technical position in the Business Planning Program responsible for information technology resources and operations, which requires hands on manipulation to include installation, troubleshooting, repair and oversight of IT resources. Develops queries, analyzes, and compiles district computer resource information to meet and support agency enterprise transition, District management decisions and continuous improvement initiatives and processes. This position serves as liaison to the Office of Technology & Information Services. This Position shall:

    Coordinates and/or conducts technical training to district and area local program personnel. Provides technical assistance to district personnel on computer software and hardware problems. Repairs malfunctioning personal computers and peripheral equipment when possible. Coordinates major repair of all computer equipment when necessary. Performs both software and hardware upgrades for personal computers and ancillary hardware. Maintains inventory status of computers, peripheral equipment, and associated network equipment for the district.

  • Assists the district local area network administrator. Ensures routine backup of network storage devices. Coordinates with OTIS and other district network managers regarding network operations. Assists with analyzing district requirements for additional network connections and coordinates integration of new or modifications of existing computers on the network.

  • Ensures systems security and data integrity for the district office. Trains and implements agency security policies and procedures. Maintains data structure on network resources and requests file restores as needed.

  • Serves as District GIS coordinator responsible for coordinating all GIS activities to include hardware and software installations, training and support of ArcGIS and other mapping applications.

  • Trains users in the proper use of hardware equipment and software. Develops and writes procedures for installation, use, and problem solving of hardware and software. Maintains the district computer classroom and holds training classes on hardware and software topics. Ensures optimal operation of conference room computers and projection systems.

  • Assists Southeast District staff with the proper use, acquisition, training, maintenance, installation, and needs/requests of computer hardware and software.

  • Assists and serves on the District’s Safety Team, responsible for organizing routine safety committee meetings; office and vehicle safety analyses; arranging, providing, completing, and tracking of Tallahassee required safety-related training; maintaining, assisting and reporting of the annual review of the programs’ Job Safety Analyses.

  • Responsible for the annual property inventory and all related activities and equipment. Responds to/addresses any issues concerning the state property inventoried.

  • Assists team on special projects, as assigned. Special projects may be related to general team projects, specific time-oriented tasks or general duties as they relate to the Business Planning and overall district needs.

  • Performs other related work as required

    Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Knowledge of distributed processing operations, software, procedures, and equipment.

  • Knowledge of the principles, practices, and techniques of computer programming and/or computer systems analysis.

  • Knowledge of computers, peripheral equipment, software and telephone hardware and software.

  • Ability to identify and resolve problems with computer systems, hardware, software, and telephones.

  • Ability to determine work priorities and ensure proper completion of work assignments.

  • Ability to work independently. Ability to travel and maintain a valid driver’s license.

  • Ability to identify user needs related to computer hardware and software and recommend solutions.

  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with co-workers and leadership.

  • Ability to interact with customers in a tactful and courteous manner.

  • Ability to communicate effectively and professionally, both verbally and in writing.

  • Ability to meet established performance standards as identified in the District Performance Standards document.

  • Position of Trust

  • Maintain a valid driver license .
